The 2026 cars are set to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly than this year.

The world of Formula 1 has revealed the official language that will be used to reference the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 regulations.

The championship is implementing what is considered the largest regulation change in its competitive history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which maintain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher energy storage, necessitating key advancements in the aero packages.

Throughout races, competitors will strategically manage battery power – sometimes even hot laps – to secure the peak performance.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a wide range of fans, including new, casual and core fans, to understand which phrases would improve understanding of the central aspects of the 2026 changes.

The primary aim was to make a range of advanced new areas of the sport as easy to grasp as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, initial designations for certain devices – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favour of intuitive labels that directly explain the actual function of the technology.

What's the New Technology?

According to rule-makers that competitors will have greater control to determine tactics regarding energy deployment, harvesting, and conservation.

The 2026 rules introduce a series of modes that will be visually displayed on television graphics to improve the fans' insight of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the current DRS. It provides a surge of additional ERS power deployable when a driver is less than a second the car ahead to assist with an pass.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the hybrid system that can be utilized during attack or defence. It grants the pilot peak output at the click of a switch.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be deployed strategically, as the total energy is capped.

  • Active Aero: Both the nose and rear wings move automatically – opening on the straights for minimal air resistance and top speed, and closing in the corners for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can replenish their battery with energy harvested under braking, or during coasting at the straight's end or in certain corners where only reduced throttle is applied.

2026 Car Specifications

The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter than this year, with a distance between axles shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight decreased by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is projected to decrease by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The cars will utilize moveable wing elements – both wings will open on the straights to cut resistance and boost top speed and click back into place for maximum cornering performance.

Tyres will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30mm at the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in power produced by the ICE and the battery and motor, up from about 20% electrical this year.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the removal of the MGU-H, the complicated and costly unit that recovered energy from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on 100% sustainable fuel, created from biomass or lab-created processes.
