Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such medications must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
