When Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Popular Image Shows Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her back yard. On a recent weekend evening, she, along with numerous local residents, detected cracking sounds ringing out through the community.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. She left her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore told her trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the avenue, talking to a pair who had run up the slope still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running at something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Heroism Amidst Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many moments of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, officers and medical teams attending to numerous the injured.

Collective Response and Assistance

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to come out of the local area, with the beach facility adjacent to the site of the attack serving as a makeshift medical station. “We are grateful all for your supportive messages and support. We are touched by the kindness for our responders,” the team commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it aids those affected.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional lifeguards, remarked that the team acted heroically from the moment the incident started right into late that evening.

“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” stated a mayor.

“The team show dedication every day in keeping our internationally renowned coastlines protected for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the terror of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much positivity we have observed in the face of such darkness.”
